We are asked all the time, why did you choose to can and not bottle your beer? The simple answer is because that’s what we decided. The more in-depth answer is:
- Beer cans are easier to travel with, put them in a cooler, on some ice and they can go to the lake, to the tailgate or wherever your adventure takes you.
- Beer cans can be packed in and packed out easily. Crush and carry out, making them a great companion when it comes to camping and other outdoor activities.
- In our region, glass isn’t easily recyclable, so we chose aluminum.
But won’t your flavor profiles be changed?
The short answer, not really. The longer answer:
- Once sealed, cans are completely dark, they don’t let light into the container and prevent beers from skunking due to a photochemical reaction that takes place when light hits the delicious liquid.
- Oxygen is not a friend of beer. We use a nitrogen doser that drops a minute amount of gas into the can after it’s filled. That nitrogen gas expand and pushes out and oxygen that may be present before the lid is placed and sealed. Furthermore, bottle lids are likely to eventually let oxygen into the environment due to the nature of their design.
- Beer cools more quickly. While we would love to guarantee that every can of First Street Brewing Company beer you drink has been kept in cold storage, we know that’s not 100% true. So, if you purchase a case of beer at the grocery store that’s been sitting outside of a refrigerator, and you pop it in the fridge when you get home, you’ll have to wait less to enjoy a nice, cold beverage.
