At the beginning of this new year we at First Street Brewing Company would like to introduce a simple idea. It’s not a battle cry or a call to fight, but a way of life in which we approach every person in our lives with civility and respect. It’s easy… all you have to do is Be First Class.
But what does that mean? Those three little words.
Be First Class.
Take a moment and think about it.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as holding the door for the next person coming through, or sharing a smile with a person you don’t know as you walk down the street. It can also be more extravagant. That donation to a charity you believe in that you finally have the opportunity to support. Stopping that guy on the sidewalk, who is absorbed in his own thoughts, from walking into the street as cars are coming.
It’s as simple as recognizing great service when given, and it is taking pride in every aspect of your job, even when you have other things on your mind. That means being the best waiter/waitress, bartender, front desk agent, teacher, accountant, healthcare provider, retailer, yoga instructor, technical support rep, programmer, writer or beer brewer you can be. Every day.
Be the best version of you. Every day.
It is recognizing that others around you are trying to do the same.
We don’t always make it. But, if we give each other the benefit of the doubt… if we give each other the space and opportunity to rebound from whatever is holding us back at the moment… we can make each other stronger.
So, stop filtering out the people or ideas we don’t like the sound of and recognize that we can agree to disagree. Let’s stop trying to force our idea of what a good life is on others. We all have to make our own choices to get us where we need to be.
Let’s put down our phones when we are with those important to us. Look each other in the eye. Listen and think before we respond. Consider another point of view. Consider what it took to make you who you are today and that the person across from you had their own path.
Be First Class.
It is equally the simplest and hardest thing to do. Because it takes the best version of you to recognize that everyone around you is also trying to be their best version too.
