Bapajack’s Biere de Garde is about to be tapped as a seasonal brew here at First Street.
The originator of our most recent seasonal brew is Jack Sandeen, an active participant in the artistic Hastings community. Jack Sandeen, coined “Bapajack” by his grandchildren, found his inspiration for this brew by tapping into early childhood memories of helping his mother in the kitchen.
He recalls sitting on the floor with a hammer and a tea towel, crushing cardamom pods for her delicious Swedish breads. Jack knew he wanted cardamom to be the star of the brew and, with the help of our brewmaster Nathan Hoeft, added layers of lemon and honey to balance out the flavor of the beer and create a well-rounded taste. As a member of the community of Hastings, Jack is known as an artist and a craftsman. In fact, he built the bar, benches, and other fixtures around the Tap Room. As a result of his donated services, he was given the opportunity to collaborate with Nathan and create a craft beer of his choosing. Bapajack’s Biere de Garde is the first collaboration beer with one of our first founders.
With the Flatwater Music Festival just around the corner, it is only fitting that we roll out the first kegs of Bapajack’s Biere de Garde at the festival, since his daughter Amy Sandeen works as the Executive Director of Prairie Loft.
We hope you will stop by and enjoy the first tastes of this brew with us and help us celebrate the community of Hastings.
